Asgardian Stones Slot: Overview
Let’s start with what’s immediately apparent: visually, NetEnt has delivered one of the most impressive video slots we’ve come across in a long time. Launching the game is likely to make more than a few people stop and stare. Still, plenty of great-looking slots fail to deliver where it matters, so the real question is how well Asgardian Stones actually plays.
As the name and theme imply, the game draws heavily on Nordic mythology. Asgardian Stones is slot that utilises 5 reels, 3 rows and 20 fixed paylines. Much like Gonzo’s Quest, it uses a reaction wins mechanic rather than traditional spinning reels. Symbols that form winning combinations explode (are removed) and are replaced by new symbols, which can then potentially create additional wins. Wins are payed out if three or more matching symbols land on a payline in consecutive columns starting from the left.
There are 9 symbols included – 5 of these are premium symbols represented by stone faces in different colors, with the red (orange?) one paying the most. The lower-value symbols are A, K and Q royals. There is also a Wild symbol that substitute for all regular symbols.
Asgardian Stones Features
Colossal Symbols
Any symbol can randomly show up in a Colossal form in both the base game and the bonus. The Wild symbol, however, is only able to appear as Colossal during the bonus. Colossal symbols are formed from 2×2 or 3×3 blocks and may or may not be fully visible, depending on how they land on the reels. Unfortunately, you can’t have 2 or more Colossal symbols appear at the same time.
Colossal Crush
These are essentially colossal symbols that can randomly crush the symbols underneath them. For each row crushed (if there is a previous win with the Colossal Crush), a multiplier is added, increasing from x2 to x4. This can lead to some fairly solid wins in the main game.
Bonus Wheel Feature
The Bonus Wheel is a 3×3 symbol block that can land only on the last 3 reels, both in the main game and in the bonus. It can appear fully or only partly visible in the play area, meaning only some of the wheel’s 8 sections may be visible. To make the wheel easier to understand, we need to show a picture of the Bonus Wheel.
As shown, 3 sections award 5 free spins, while the remaining sections are coin wins. The sections that land in the active fields (within the yellow area) are the prizes that will be awarded to the player. So, for instance, it’s possible to enter the bonus with up to 15 free spins, but it’s also possible to miss the free spins and receive coin wins instead.
Free Spins
The standout part of the bonus is that the Wild symbol appears as a colossal symbol. If a colossal wild is included in a win, it splits into 1×1 wild symbols. During free spins, the bonus wheel can be triggered again up to 3 times, and it can award a maximum of 25 additional spins in total.
Asgardian Stones Conclusion
As noted earlier, the visual team has done outstanding work. The overall production is genuinely spectacular and clearly sets itself apart from many rivals. On top of that, the gameplay feels smooth, and we didn’t run into anything that might spoil the experience. That said, it isn’t without issues. The base game doesn’t seem to provide strong enough returns, which can become irritating, and the bonus can feel over almost instantly when you’re given only 5 spins. With low to medium variance, you shouldn’t be expecting huge payouts either.
