Arctic Magic (Microgaming): Overview

New Microgaming releases are pretty rare these days. The studio that once dominated seems happier acting as an aggregator than regularly producing fresh titles. Judging by some of their recent output, that shift may not have been the worst idea. Unfortunately, it often feels like Microgaming has stopped pushing itself, and Arctic Magic is a good illustration of that. If you’re expecting the kind of spark that made Microgaming famous, this one is likely to let you down. In both presentation and gameplay, Arctic Magic feels closer to a Just For The Win slot, which makes us wonder whether it’s truly a Microgaming game at all.

Visually, Arctic Magic is passable. It leans on Art Deco-style lettering, and the overall art has an old World’s Fair vibe—retro, yet somehow futuristic. It carries that optimistic, “reach for the stars” energy you see in 1960s space-age poster art. The transparent 5 reel, 3 row grid sits in front of a snowy nighttime landscape of towering mountains and frosted trees. It’s pleasant to look at, but it also feels fairly plain and a little generic.

The soundtrack deserves a callout, as it has a distinct Andean Pan Pipe tone. Our first test run was muted, so we didn’t notice it initially. On the second session we turned audio on, and it felt like stepping into a new-age crystal shop where someone hands you a flower and insists life is a tulip. It’s very dramatic and doesn’t really suit the rest of the game. If you want to stay alert for a tense, high-energy session, you’ll probably want to mute it—otherwise you may be nodding off in minutes. It’s calming and slightly mystical, but it’s not a great match. Anyway, back to the review.

Arctic Magic runs on only 9 paylines, and because the stake is split across them, the bet sizes come out in slightly odd amounts. Starting at 9 p/c per spin, they increase in steps of 9 up to a maximum of $/€45 at the most. The slot is playable on all devices, and on mobile it’s best in landscape so you can properly take in the winter backdrop. High volatility is paired with an RTP of 96.1%, so you should expect plenty of swings. The flow is supported by a respectable hit rate of 31.37%, which helps keep the action moving.

The symbols blend classic and modern, and their values are all over the place. At the lower end you have 9 – A royals rendered in that attractive Art Deco style. The premium icons are glowing-eyed, otherworldly animals—bunnies, foxes, reindeers, wolves, and polar bears. Five polar bears pay 83 times the stake, which is modest next to the mountain wild symbols. Hit five of those and you’ll land 1,111 times the stake. The wild substitutes for any symbol except the scatter, and when it helps create a winning line, the resulting payout is doubled.

Arctic Magic (Microgaming): Features

Free spins feature

On the features front, Microgaming has clearly chosen quality over quantity, as there’s only one extra feature to talk about. The stated goal was to build on the appeal of free spins with Multipliers, and that’s definitely the main attraction here. The scatter is a snowflake viewed as if under a microscope, and landing 3 or more anywhere triggers 15 Free Spins. Scatters also pay well on their own, with 5 awarding 500 times the stake before the free spins even begin.

Every win during the bonus is boosted by a x3 multiplier. Scatters can still land in the feature, allowing free spins to be retriggered. Scatters and wilds are treated as especially useful, so they only require 2 of a kind on a payline to return a small coin payout. Whenever either appears, you also get a pleasant aurora borealis animation across the screen for a hint of winter magic.

Arctic Magic (Microgaming): Verdict

There isn’t much “magic” in Arctic Magic. In reality, it offers very little originality or standout quality that would make you want to return. It also turns out to be a reskin of Microgaming’s 2019 Christmas release Festive Indulgance. While the team managed to give that title some charm and personality, Arctic Magic doesn’t carry the same appeal. The theme comes off as generic, the symbols blur together, and the gameplay is too thin to compensate for the bland presentation.

Arctic Magic isn’t particularly fun, and it doesn’t take long for the average gameplay to become obvious. Sure, wilds and scatters can deliver a hefty pile of coins, but they run into the same issue seen with symbols in a game like A Dark Matter. In short: 5 wilds or scatters are extremely valuable but uncommon, and the payouts for 4 of a kind or fewer fall off sharply. Even so, big hits can happen, and while the overall potential is far from thrilling, it’s not exactly a Christmas miracle either. Maximum wins are capped at $150,000, or roughly 3,333 times the stake (a very Just For The Win-style figure, which supports our suspicion).

The one clear positive is the strong RTP. The underlying math model, however, doesn’t shine. Arctic Magic is a high-risk slot with limited reward, though like any game it can still produce wins (and losses). If you care about entertainment value when spinning, you’ll want to look elsewhere. The base game is extremely dull, and the free spins round plays almost the same as the main game. Combine that with generic visuals, and there’s not much here to get excited about.
