Arcanum: Slot Overview
If you’ve ever suspected there could be more to reality than what our five senses and scientific tools can detect—or you simply enjoy ELK Studios slots—then the developer’s newest trip into the strange and wonderful may be right up your street. The slot is Arcanum, a term that instantly suggests concealed secrets and arcane knowledge. That sense of mystery fits perfectly with a game about wizards, spellcraft, and peering past the surface of everyday life. With a dash of imagination, perhaps.
In this world, Arcanum is described as a substance used to forge ancient magic, and a wizard roams in search of it. Arcanum divides its time between two enigmatic landscapes. The base game takes place in a blue-tinged realm of floating rocks, planets, and rough hills. The other setting is a peach-coloured domain where massive hooded statues loom over anyone passing through. In both states, the grid sits inside a stone archway that feels like a portal to elsewhere, topped with various meters that monitor certain features. Through titles like those in its Cygnus range, IO, Stars of Orion, Phoenix Graveyard, and now this one, ELK Studios continues to show a fascination with the mysterious side of life—and maybe what lies beyond it.

The gameplay runs on a 6×7 grid, with wins paid via clusters rather than fixed paylines. Any group of five or more matching symbols connected anywhere on the grid pays out. Those winning symbols are removed, then new ones tumble in to create cascades that can lead to additional wins. In typical ELK Studios fashion, the RTP is set at 94% throughout, applying to regular spins from $/€0.20 up to $/€100 as well as any X-iter feature buys. Volatility sits firmly at the high end, so it’s designed for bigger swings instead of smooth, steady results.
Four small rock-set gems make up Arcana’s lower-value symbols, while four larger gems represent the higher pays. A five-of-a-kind cluster returns 0.1x to 1x the bet. The biggest clusters reach 36+ OAK and pay 75x to 1,000x the stake when they hit. Wilds play a major role in the feature set, and they can substitute for all standard pay symbols.
Arcanum: Slot Features

Arcanum’s spell book is packed with two wizard symbols, a selection of magical spells, a global multiplier, feature symbols, free spins, plus X-iter feature buys.
Wizard and Mirror Wizard Symbols
The wizard symbol and the mirror wizard symbol function as persistent wilds that move to new empty spots before each symbol refill. A wizard symbol is guaranteed every round, while a mirror wizard can show up on any symbol drop.
Magical Spells
Magical spells can be hidden behind pay symbols. They are collected once revealed under a winning cluster and then stored in the spell inventory. There are five different magical spells:
- Expanding – Changes all pay symbols in a selected area into a single pay symbol type. If 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 expanding spells are collected, the area becomes 2×2, 3×3, 4×4, 5×5, or 6×6, respectively. If the spell chooses a wizard or mirror wizard symbol, it enlarges it into a big symbol of the stated size. A regular-sized wizard will change position if a big wizard covers it.
- Add Wild – Adds 1 extra wild symbol to the reels for each collected add wild spell.
- Wild Column – Turns all pay symbols into wilds in the wizard’s column.
- Wild Cross – Converts all pay symbols into wilds in an X-shape starting from the wizard symbol.
- Wild Transform – Picks 1, 2, or 3 pay symbol types on the reels and transforms them into wilds.
The wizard win tracker monitors cluster wins that include the wizard symbol. Achieving three cluster wins with the wizard completes the wizard win tracker. When wins stop and the tracker is complete, all stored magical spells are triggered, clearing the inventory. Spells activate in the order: expanding, add wilds, wild transform, wild column, then wild cross. The wizard’s win tracker resets and becomes inactive until the wizard shifts to a new position.
Global Multiplier
The global multiplier begins at x1 and applies to all winning combinations. Multiplier symbols may be hidden behind pay symbols and are collected when uncovered by winning clusters. Each multiplier symbol increases the global multiplier by +1. The global multiplier resets at the end of a spin.
Feature Symbols
The two feature symbols are the transform orb and the explosive orb. The transform orb chooses a pay symbol type on the reels and upgrades them all to an equal or higher value pay symbol type once no more wins are present. The explosive orb clears all pay symbols in an area sized 3×3, 5×5, or 6×7 when there are no more wins. Any revealed spells and multiplier symbols are collected.
Bonus Game
Landing 3+ scatters awards 7 free spins. The global multiplier, magical spell inventory, mirror wizard symbols, and the wizard’s win tracker remain persistent when entering the bonus round and between free spins. Uncovering an extra drop symbol behind winning clusters grants +1 free spin. If the feature is triggered with 4 scatters, players receive 7 Mirage Bonus free spins, which include an additional mirror wizard symbol. Hitting 5 scatters awards 7 Arcanum Bonus free spins, which come with 2 extra mirror wizard symbols.
X-iter
The X-iter includes five purchasable features. These are Bonus Hunt for 2.5x, buying a spin with more than 4 times the chance to trigger a bonus game, or Mega Hunt at 5x, where the chance is more than 8 times. Spellstorm costs 10x to buy a round with an initial drop that can collect potential spells and multiplier symbols before the main symbol drop. Alternatively, a regular bonus purchase costs 100x, while a Mirage bonus costs 250x the bet to buy.

Arcanum: Slot Verdict
Arcanum is a polished release that continues ELK Studios’ ongoing dive into the esoteric. It’s a theme the developer has used effectively before, and it’s put to work again here. The dual-world backdrop establishes the intrigue, while the mechanics are where the “magic” can happen. The game has plenty going on, but it doesn’t feel unmanageably complicated, with a wide set of features that connect together and can perform well when they combine. There’s also a light narrative thread supporting the fantasy visuals, and the wizard doesn’t just “travel” in concept—he appears on every spin, shifts around the grid, acts as a wild, and serves as a gateway into additional features.
The idea of uncovering symbols beneath winning clusters fits the theme of revealing hidden knowledge, even if the spells themselves aren’t wildly original, largely coming down to adding wilds or transforming pay symbols. Even so, on a cluster-pay grid their impact can be meaningful, and the transform and explosive feature symbols help too, along with the global multiplier to complete the package. It’s worth noting that the game can sometimes kick off lots of activity without translating into major cash returns. In those moments, Arcanum feels more like a skilled illusionist than a true rule-bending sorcerer. Still, with a win cap of 10,000x the bet and a full set of features available, a very different outcome is technically possible.
ELK Studios is particularly strong at building intricate, feature-linked slots, and Arcanum is another solid example of that approach. It didn’t quite come across as a standout, though—hard to pin down exactly why—and it doesn’t have the same punch as something like the adrenaline-heavy Nitropolis slot. Even so, it’s an easy recommendation for players who enjoy the studio’s talent for stacking mechanics and wrapping them in mystery.
