Age of Huracan: Slot Overview
Before 2012 rolled around, mention the Mayans and many people’s thoughts immediately jumped to doomsday predictions. That idea came from the Maya Long Count, which some interpreted as pointing to December 21 (or 23), 2012 as a kind of final deadline. Luckily for everyone, the disaster so many had forecast, dreaded, or even wished for never materialised, and it all passed as quietly as the Y2K panic. Computers didn’t malfunction, no planet slammed into Earth, and the heavens didn’t unleash chaos. It turned out to be an ordinary Friday: people got up, went to school or work, relaxed after the week, and carried on as normal.
Of course, it’s also possible the “end” is a slow-burn event that only began in 2012. We’ll see. In the meantime, Kalamba Games offers Age of Huracan as a playable glimpse of what could be. Huracán (Spanish for “hurricane”) was the Mayan God of Storms, and he delivers plenty of them in one of Age of Huracan’s bonus games. Alongside free spins, players can chase wins through a K-Cash feature or use the Hyper Bonus to jump straight into either option.
Unless you’ve been tracking Kalamba Games obsessively, you may not realise Age of Huracan is the studio’s 50th slot. It certainly has the polish you’d expect from an established developer, featuring a 5-reel, 1,024 pay ways layout set within a well-illustrated jungle scene packed with lush greenery and vine-draped, mossy temples. It’s an attractive game, but if the theme is what draws you in, you’ll want to hold out for the free spins, because that’s where Kalamba turns things up a notch.
Any device will do for riding out the storm, with wagers running from 50 p/c to $/€100 per spin. From a maths perspective, Kalamba has gone for a fairly punchy setup for its 50th title, combining strong upside with a highly volatile engine they rate at 9 out of 10. The hit rate is slightly lower than some might anticipate at 16.7%, but most players should be comfortable with an RTP ranging from 96.62% and 96.75% – with the spread influenced by the bonus buy options.
Looking at the paytable, there are a couple of small quirks in how wins are awarded. The lowest symbol and the two highest symbols pay from two of a kind upwards, while the remaining symbols require at least three to pay. The lineup begins with 9-A card ranks, followed by daggers, glowing green items, and four Mayan characters. The three lower-value characters return 2 to 10x the bet for five of a kind, while the top character is the clear standout at 100x for five. The last symbol to note before the weather turns is the Mayan Calendar-style wild, which substitutes for every symbol except the Bonus or K-Cash.
Age of Huracan: Slot Features
Kalamba has tweaked the familiar hold & win concept, naming it K-Cash, and added a free spins round to increase the excitement. In the base game, blue or orange K-Cash symbols can land on any reel; Blue symbols add a cash amount to the meter in the top right, while orange symbols fill a meter on the left, with every 5 raising the multiplier by 1, up to x5.
When 3 or more K-Cash symbols land, they lock in place, and 3 K-Cash Spins begin. Each additional K-Cash symbol locks and resets the remaining spins back to 3. As in the base game, orange symbols continue to build the multiplier meter. Once the spins end or the grid is full, the collected cash total is multiplied by the meter value and paid. On top of that, full grid wins grant a reward equal to 10x the bet, multiplied by the value shown on the multiplier meter.
The scatter is the enigmatic character standing in front of a tornado. Hitting 3, 4, or 5 in the base game awards 3, 8, or 15 free spins and also pays 2, 5, or 10 times the stake. Free spins don’t introduce any new mechanics beyond a more intense stormy backdrop, though the feature can be retriggered when 2, 3, 4, or 5 scatters land, awarding 3, 8, 12, or 15 free spins.
The last add-on is the HyperBonus, assuming feature buys are allowed in your region. Players can pick from three options. These are 3 Cash Spins with an initial x5 multiplier for 21.2x the bet, or 8, or 15 free spins for 35.4x or 66.3x the total stake.
Age of Huracan: Slot Verdict
Age of Huracan has plenty going for it, though the features feel like they could have been pushed further to make the game more compelling. To start, the way the K-Cash collector allows value to build before K-Cash Spins even begin is genuinely intriguing. It gives hold & win fans something a bit different to play around with. The drawback is that the numbers aren’t particularly generous. The multiplier meter caps at x5, and K-Cash symbols top out at 4 times the bet. A quick calculation shows that a completely maxed-out full screen is worth 400x the bet. The Full Grid prize helps, but even so, it’s not the kind of feature that’s likely to produce massive totals.
The rest of the game doesn’t feel quite as limited in terms of potential, which should reassure tornado hunters. Age of Huracan offers a maximum win of 10,240 times the bet, matching the payout for a full grid of the highest-paying symbol. Still, the free spins round would have been far stronger with some sort of modifier to make it stand apart from the base game. As it stands, it’s completely lacking in added spice; you can’t even collect K-Cash symbols while it’s running. In fact, it can feel like a relief when free spins finish, simply so you can return to the base game and continue from where you left off.
As a 50th release, Age of Huracan reflects much of what Kalamba has delivered up to now – impressive visuals, strong atmosphere, decent stats, but some puzzling feature decisions. A bit more creativity for free spins and a bit more value in K-Cash Spins would have gone a long way. Instead, the final package comes across as slightly uneven, where a small adjustment or two could have made a noticeable improvement.
