Slingshot Studio’s A Dark Matter slot has nothing to do with Peter Straub’s book of the same title. What it does share with that unsettling story is a clear footing in the horror genre. Victorians had a fascination with this kind of eerie unknown, chasing it through mediums, séances, and spiritualism. That’s the exact period Slingshot Studios channels in A Dark Matter, which unfolds inside the ominous Wraith Manor where unsettling happenings are always possible.

And yes, the mansion is named—Slingshot has also built a fairly detailed backstory to add weight to the experience. Supposedly, the town of Stonehurst has been plagued by problems tied to Wraith Manor, overseen by Lady Eleanor Wraith. Her late husband built a shipping fortune and collected bizarre, unusual artifacts. Now, following a string of unexplained disappearances, the town has sought outside help. Enter the mysterious Nathan Highmore, determined to uncover what’s really going on.

With so much narrative in the background, Wraith Manor’s straightforward 5-reel, 3-row layout can feel a bit plain when the game first boots up. Still, surprises do appear, starting with the paytable. The most noticeable detail is that the slot runs on just 5 paylines, which is unusual for a 5-reel title. The upside is that wins can be made in both directions, which effectively gives those paylines extra value.

After that, the symbol payouts are unexpectedly strong. Even the 10 – A card suit icons pay a hefty 0.6x to 14x the stake. From there, the values climb fast. Lastly, there are Microgaming’s trademarked Invading Wilds—when a full wild stack lands on reels 2 or 4, it copies itself onto a neighboring reel and turns that reel wild. On top of that, a full wild stack on reels 2 and 4 will transform reel 3 into a wild reel.

A Dark Matter clearly had a lot of effort invested into it—not only as a slot, but as a complete setting with lore attached. It almost comes across like an executive’s passion project, with real care taken to shape a cohesive experience. Slingshot even created a dedicated website to expand the story of A Dark Matter and its five central characters. The risk of putting so much emphasis on the “world” around a slot is that it can sometimes overshadow the gameplay. A Dark Matter doesn’t fully fall into that trap, but it does come close.

It’s not just Wraith Manor that feels touched by the strange—the paytable has its own peculiarities. The symbol values look impressive at first, but once you start spinning, you may realize how little they often matter. While five of a kind rewards are excellent, the three- and four-of-a-kind payouts are so much smaller that it can feel borderline absurd. Look at the top four premium symbols: four of a kind pays 7x, 8x, 12x, 16x, and 20x respectively, while five of a kind pays 60x, 80x, 120x, 160x, and 600x. That seems to be Slingshot Studio’s approach to building volatility. Three- and even four-of-a-kind hits happen frequently, but landing five premium symbols on a payline is extremely uncommon. In the end, most wins you’ll see are disappointingly small. Worse still, the maximum win appears to be capped at 2,400 times the stake.

Beyond the win potential, the biggest missed chance is—ironically—the story itself. The website, characters, and overall mood do a great job of building intrigue and suspense, but the game never delivers a true payoff. It would have been thrilling if the scatters also triggered a final confrontation between good and evil. Maybe some Cthulhu-like monster—wings, tendrils, and slime—could erupt Alien-style from Lady Wraith’s chest for a dramatic showdown with Nathan in the basement. Instead, A Dark Matter remains a strangely distinctive slot that’s worth trying. Will committed players stay for the long haul? Probably not, though it could easily find an audience among casual players.
